Conversion of a grade I stable block
Syon Park, Isleworth
The brief
This project involved the conversion of a Grade I stable block and grade II buildings into offices for the Garden Centre Group (formerly Wyevale). Now owned by the National Trust, the original estate included stable block, tack room and kitchen gardens.
Specific elements of the build
The garden centre was operational during the whole build so it was important that we accommodated members of the public during the majority of our working hours. In addition, the listed status of the building had to be observed. This meant using materials that were compatible with the existing fabric, both in terms of appearance and physical properties. (Some materials can actually harm the existing historic fabric and speed up deterioration.) We also considered durability and future maintenance requirements.
